The Story

Impatiens mirabilis is a rare type of impatiens from the limestone forests of Southeast Asia. It forms a large, swollen caudex (a thickened stem base) that can grow over 60 cm wide and stores water to help the plant survive dry spells. Thin upright stems grow from this base, topped with soft, pale to mid-green leaves that are broad and slightly veined. The plant produces cream to yellow, helmet-shaped flowers at various times of the year, especially in summer.

It grows slowly and prefers a warm, stable environment with careful watering. Good drainage is essential, making it suitable for container growing. It may drop its leaves briefly during dormancy or when humidity is too low. This plant is mainly grown for its interesting shape and caudex, which becomes more noticeable as it matures.

How to care for your Impatiens -

Water:  Allow soil to dry out partially between waterings. Keep lightly moist during active growth but avoid saturated soil. Reduce watering during cooler months or periods of dormancy.

Light: They enjoy bright but indirect sunlight, direct sun can scorch the leaves.

Humidity: They love warmth and humidity, a bathroom or kitchen would be a perfect spot.

Temperature: They prefer warm temperatures about 20 degrees C.
